Australian Open ‘08 has again produced 2 big upsets in grand slam tennis. First, Justine Henin in the women’s singles, & then, Roger Federer in the men’s. Although several top-seeded players were ousted earlier on, yet, both world no. 1s were the more serious casualties considering their caliber & ranking in the sport. Okay, it’s only the 1st of the 4 grand slam tennis tournaments of the year (every year, in fact!) but there’ll still be a lot more unexpected calls & results to come. For the top 1 players, to lose in any tournaments (grand slam or not) is a major upset. People would think that they can’t be wrong..they can’t commit mistakes. But they, too, are human beings & no matter how great they are in a certain sport, there are times as well when they just can’t do things right or be the better players than the others.

On the other hand, my favorite MarSha has captured her 3rd grand slam victory & is now hitting headlines penned as “4Ses” (Sharapova savours sweet success). I love this woman & the energy she has the moment she steps into the court. At such a young age coupled with total agility, blistering forehand & killer backhand shots, who would dare to stop her in her quest for a major title at the aussie open this year! No one could..no way. She was so determined & even more inspired when former champ Billie Jean King woke her up before the final game with a text message: “Champions take chances & pressure is a privilege.” She took hers & prevailed. How nice!

Men’s battle for the most coveted title will be later today, Sunday. I have no specific favorite yet but I have a strong feeling that Djokovic will take on the aspiring Tsonga for the title. For sure, I will cheer for Djokovic for a hundred & one reasons. ;)

Note on 28.01.08: So, my cutie champ, Djokovic did prevail! Warm cheers for him…
