Beijing Olympics, ATP Tour, U.S. Open, and Thailand Open 2008 - the list goes on!

This was a scene that I took during the Thailand Open 2007. I was lucky to be able to secure free tickets to the games almost for the entire duration of the tournament. I hope that despite of the ongoing Beijing Games and the fast-approaching U.S. Open 2008, it would still be business as usual for the Thailand Open 2008. This year’s tennis isn’t really historically remarkable for the legendary Roger Federer. After losing a tough match to Nadal in the French Open, he again duplicated his loss to the same competitor in the Wimbledon. Let the ball remain round as it is — with the more classic and graceful ways of Federer topping matches from one to another — comes a more challenging episode of the mascular challengers, hence, the mascular prevailed! It doesn’t really matter — I’m still the traditional and conventional type who cherishes old-fashioned classical music and the more graceful ways of swaying to the grooves of waltz and ballroom dancing tunes. If I have to re-live life and envision myself artistically and athletically, I think I would still adore grace and precision in style and action rather than indulging in an intensive workout for the heavy weights. I’m not going for boxing, kick boxing, or sumo, anyway. Sharing with you a little bit of my passion in the game. Below are some of the tennis rackets that I use in my practice games. I previously used Prince and Yonnex, ‘though quite heavy but they’re good ones. My Wilson rackets are for keeps and I use them once in a while but my new-found favorite is now the classy Babolat — same as Andy Roddick’s. The feel is just so good and it gives me more confidence in hitting my style (it’s a hit strong-hit hard-hit out style I know! don’t tease me, hehe!). You’ll get very well controlled hits and it just feels good — I’m loving it! What racket model could be the next top brand to conquer the tennis market in the near future? I wonder in excitement. Back to business, this year’s remarkable Beijing Olympics has been a nice battleground for the Bryan Brothers and the Federer-Wawrinka duo where the latter pair successfully defended their challenger’s crown dethroning the more popular and top-ranked tennis doubles champions, the Bryans. I’m a big fan of both pairs anyway that it doesn’t really matter who won or lost. Federer did not get the Olympic gold for the singles but he did in the doubles. Still something to celebrate — hurray! The final grand slam of the year, the U.S. Open, is just around the corner. Could this be the turning point of Federer’s career? Could he set one more mark towards beating Sampras’ world record of grand slam wins? I bet he will…

Everybody knows that the inflation in Asia is climbing so fast. The economic problems that we face continue to dwell before us as if there ’s really no signs of recovery seen so far. We all have to worry about this continuing increase or rise in inflation as well as the risk of economic slowdown in any way as they significantly affect our lives and our lifestyles. Thailand has not been spared either with a reported inflation rate of its record highest level of 8.9% in 10yrs while the GDP growth declined in 2007. All these including the decrease in exports mean that we may now be entering the global stagflation era, which is a period of slowing economic growth with an accelerated inflation. It does sound so scary, isn’t it? How much more difficult is it for the low wage earners and the unemployed? It’s devastating to note that we are in this seemingly hopeless economic situation. Stagflation is a rather more explosive description of a certain economic condition (’stag’ for stagnation meaning getting worse, ‘flation’ for inflation meaning heating up) where it is mostly associated with negative supply shock, i.e. rising oil prices, or cost-push inflation. What is also scary is when deflation strikes where if inflation distributes unevenly among the sectors. This dilemma can occur in situations like having a deflation in the housing sector but inflation in the goods and services sector. We really don’t have much choice, do we?

Initial reports on the first few days when professional and amateur athletes arrived in China for the Beijing Games 2008 said that many athletes have difficulty coping with the pollution and heat in China. As they undergo with their last minute training and practices, you would find these well-trained and super fit athletes gasping for air and trying to breathe normally as they’re not accustomed to the climate in the tropics. The pollution in the city where they are being accommodated as well as the super tropical heat have taken a toll on them. Well, all I can say is that “Good luck to them despite all these! They are in China at this point of time for the Olympics.” And speaking about air pollution and the pinching pain of fuel price rise, who said that all SUVs are gas guzzlers? They are wrong! The Chevy Equinox which will soon be launched here in Thailand uses hydrogen and emits only water vapour. So, the problem of air pollution that’s brought by the gasoline and crude-fueled cars is solved! Is it? I’m not sure about that!

Today is very phenomenal — 08.08.08 ! My favorite number, 8 or 38. The opening day of the Beijing Olympics 2008 in China, of course. My favorite tennis legend, Roger Federer, is there to compete and win gold for his country. The tennis event is a star-studded and I’m going to check out the progress on a daily basis. I hope Federer will get the gold in the Men’s Singles event. Some Thai and Filipino delegates also take their share of the limelight. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of the Kingdom of Thailand both went to offer support to their respective teams and to boost up their ego and enthusiasm in competing their games to their best for the countries that they represent. Good luck to them all and may the best sportsmen win! Tonight is a big celebration and I’m going to celebrate and join with others in witnessing the grandeur opening ceremony of the Beijing Games which is now being broadcast live via CAT-Thailand to all TV stations althroughout the kingdom. I heard that it’s a magnificent show with super hi-tech and culturally-rich theme that displays the various countries richness of culture and symbol. Let me go home! See you at the Olympics.

Wee hours in the morning that was! I couldn’t help but ignore my Yahoo! Messenger from buzzing every 10sec apart because I was too tired and very sleepy after a 6-hour tennis session with friends the night before at AIT. I know that was too much but the games went on and on and on…pretty exhausting and energy-draining that made my muscles really ache like anything that it’s almost impossible to walk the next morning — but it was fun in the end! Yet, my computer never ceased to make noise while I was in a slumber. It was when I realized that my youngest sis was at the other end waiting for me to answer her call. She just can’t wait till I wake up in the morning and wants me to immediately post her inspirational poem that she wrote for us, her sisters, in my 2 websites. It was an order I can’t believe! Both websites, Te Jen, okay? Wow. But I guess she wants to dedicate it to sis Jade Mae as she’ll be celebrating her birthday tomorrow. Okay, here it goes —

For three long weeks, my sister and her family closed their Cherished Child Care Center in Nevada to spend some quality time with her husband’s parents in Illinois. Christmas is just around the corner. Excited to go home again, me and my sisters decided to meet and visit our folks back home once again come December. Big surprises as well as tiny presents will be given away to friends and relatives as token of our love and friendships. If you miss your loved ones, even the unforgiving and seemingly unnegotiable rising of prices couldn’t stop us from going home. Many people celebrate a special day of giving gifts to the less fortunate ones on Boxing Day—happening on the day right after Christmas Day in most commonwealth nations such as Canada, the U.K., etc. However, Black Friday is the first shopping day after Thanksgiving that is also celebrated in the United States. Since Thanksgiving in the U.S. falls on the fourth Thursday of November, Black Friday may fall between the 23rd and 29th of November wherein it signifies the start of Christmas shopping season.

During Black Friday, many retailers would open their shops for the shoppers as early as 5 am…some would even open a lot earlier than that and offer door-buster thanksgiving deals. Although Black Friday has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season, the term Black Friday has been traced back only to the 1970s. The news media frequently refer to Black Friday as the busiest retail shopping day of the year, but while it has been one of the busiest days in terms of customer traffic, actual sales volume, Black Friday was usually the 5th-10th busiest day.

Several weeks back, a passenger boat carrying more than 850 passengers and crew sank off the coast of Sibuyan Island, Romblon, the Philippines as it sailed into the path of typhoon ‘Frank’. It was a huge boat but the super strength of the typhoon outpowered the powerful engines of the ship, M/V Princess of the Stars, which capsized on June 21 ‘08. What a waste of lives and properties, and how tragic that really was! The people lost their lives unnecessarily as there were only a handful of survivors in that incident. The boat could have also been donated to the Angel Ministries instead for use in the creation of children’s animations as well as anti-drug documentaries.
