A man suffering from constipation for 20 yrs started eating 6pcs of OKRA everyday & his blood sugar dropped from 135 to 98, his cholesterol & acid reflux were then under control. Okra is a powerhouse of valuable nutrients, nearly half of which is soluble fiber in the form of gums & pectins. Soluble fiber helps to lower serum cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease. The other half is insoluble fiber which helps to keep the intestinal tract healthy, decreasing the risk of some forms of cancer, especially colo-rectal cancer. Nearly 10% of the recommended levels of vitamin B6 & folic acid is also present in a half cup of cooked okra. Okra is a rich source of many nutrients, including fiber, vitamin B6 & folic acid.
More facts about okra:
1. The superior fiber found in okra helps to stabilize blood sugar as it curbs the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract.
2. Okra’s mucilage not only binds cholesterol but bile acid carrying toxins dumped into it by the filtering liver. But it doesn’t stop there…
3. Many alternative health practitioners believe all disease begins in the colon. The okra fiber, absorbing water & ensuring bulk in stools, helps prevent
constipation. Fiber in general is helpful for this but okra is one of the best, along with ground flax seed & psyllium. Unlike harsh wheat bran, which can irritate or injure the intestinal tract, okra’s mucilage soothes, & okra facilitates elimination more comfortably by its slippery characteristic many people abhor. In other words, this incredibly valuable vegetable not only binds excess cholesterol & toxins (in bile acids) which cause numerous health problems, if not evacuated, but also assures their easy passage from the body. The veggie is completely non-toxic, non-habit forming (except for the many who greatly enjoy eating it), has no adverse side effects, is full of nutrients, & is economically within reach of most.
4. Further contributing to the health of the intestinal tract, okra fiber (as well as flax & psyllium) has no equal among fibers for feeding the good bacteria (probiotics).
5. To retain most of okra’s nutrients & self-digesting enzymes, it should be cooked as little as possible, e.g. with low heat or lightly steamed. Some eat it raw.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackHow to eat okra. should we eat raw. pls advise.
sharma: thanks for dropping by. there are many ways to make an okra recipe ;). you can prepare a vegetable soup with okra as one of the ingredients, stewed fish with okra toppings, okra salad (half-cooked/half-boiled). fried vegetable dish will do with okra, too. you can invent your own recipe provided that you don’t over-cook the okra or vegetables to retain their nutritional values. i personally like okra salad or just purely a steamed okra dipped into a salty-sour sauce.
I am very impressed with the nutritional values of okra. Okra also taste good. I eat it often not very often which I should after reading reading its values. Thanks for providing the information. Regards, Mohi

I am diabetic and my daughter told me to drink a pitcher of water with 5 to 6 raw okra in it. So the water gets slimy. Is this proceedure right? I read from this column that eating 6 pieces of okra a day can lower my blood sugar level. Thank you for the messages your readers

My son in law was dianosed last year with type
2 diabetes. He tried the diet, but failed miserably, and went back to eating all the foods he likes. Needless to say, about a couple of weeks ago, he encountered a health problem with his eyes, (double vision). Now he is trying to get his diet straighted out. He loves okra, but only fried. Is it possible for him to have it fried if he cooks it ih extra virgin olive oil? also, can you tell me if the light virgin olive oil is also good?
thank you
@ motherinlaw: in all honesty, olive oil is good. yes, he can have a fried okra but the best recommendation for his diet is to have either half-boiled or steamed okra as part of his meal.
